English - Chapter 26 - Ash-Shuara

Translation by Aisha Bewley — Permalink

Verse 1 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:1

Verse 2 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:2

Those are the Signs of the Clear Book

Verse 3 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:3

Perhaps you will destroy yourself with grief because they will not become muminun

Verse 4 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:4

If We wished We could send down a Sign to them from heaven, before which their heads would be bowed low in subjection

Verse 5 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:5

But no fresh reminder from the All-Merciful reaches them without their turning away from it

Verse 6 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:6

They have denied the truth, but the news of what they mocked will certainly come to them

Verse 7 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:7

Have they not looked at the earth and seen how We have made every sort of beneficial species grow in it

Verse 8 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:8

There is certainly a Sign in that, yet most of them are not muminun

Verse 9 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:9

Truly your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful

Verse 10 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:10

When your Lord called out to Musa: ´Go to the wrongdoing people

Verse 11 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:11

the people of Pharaoh. Will they not have taqwa?´

Verse 12 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:12

He said, ´My Lord, I fear they will deny me

Verse 13 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:13

and that my breast will be constricted and that my tongue will not be free, so send Harun as a Messenger as well

Verse 14 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:14

They hold a wrong action against me and I fear that they may kill me.´

Verse 15 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:15

He said, ´By no means! Go, both of you, with Our Signs. We will certainly be together with you, listening

Verse 16 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:16

Go to Pharaoh and say, "We are the Messenger of the Lord of all the worlds

Verse 17 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:17

to tell you to send the tribe of Israel away with us."´

Verse 18 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:18

He said, ´Did we not bring you up among us as a child and did you not spend many years of your life among us

Verse 19 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:19

Yet you did the deed you did and were ungrateful.´

Verse 20 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:20

He said, ´At the time I did it I was one of the misguided

Verse 21 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:21

and so I fled from you when I was in fear of you but my Lord gave me right judgement and made me one of the Messengers

Verse 22 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:22

And anyway you can only reproach me with this favour because you made the tribe of Israel into slaves!´

Verse 23 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:23

Pharaoh said, ´What is the Lord of all the worlds?´

Verse 24 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:24

He said, ´The Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything between them if you knew for sure.´

Verse 25 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:25

He said to those around him, ´Are you listening?´

Verse 26 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:26

He said, ´Your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers, the previous peoples.´

Verse 27 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:27

He said, ´This Messenger, who has been sent to you, is mad.´

Verse 28 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:28

He said, ´The Lord of the East and the West and everything between them if you used your intellect.´

Verse 29 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:29

He said, ´If you take any god other than me, I will certainly throw you into prison.´

Verse 30 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:30

He said, ´Even if I were to bring you something undeniable?´

Verse 31 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:31

He said, ´Produce it then if you are someone telling the truth.´

Verse 32 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:32

So He threw down his staff and there it was, unmistakably a snake

Verse 33 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:33

And he drew out his hand and there it was, pure white to those who looked

Verse 34 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:34

He said to the High Council round about him, ´This certainly is a skilled magician

Verse 35 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:35

who desires by his magic to expel you from your land, so what do you recommend?´

Verse 36 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:36

They said, ´Detain him and his brother and send out marshals to the cities

Verse 37 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:37

to bring you all the skilled magicians.´

Verse 38 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:38

So the magicians were assembled for a meeting on a specified day

Verse 39 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:39

The people were asked, ´Are you all assembled

Verse 40 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:40

so we can follow the magicians if they are the winners?´

Verse 41 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:41

When the magicians came, they said to Pharaoh, ´Will we be rewarded if we are the winners?´

Verse 42 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:42

He said, ´Yes, and in that case you will be among those brought near.´

Verse 43 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:43

Musa said to them, ´Throw whatever it is you are going to throw!´

Verse 44 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:44

They threw down their ropes and staffs and said, ´By the might of Pharaoh we are the winners.´

Verse 45 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:45

But Musa threw down his staff and at once it swallowed up what they had fabricated

Verse 46 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:46

The magicians threw themselves down, prostrating

Verse 47 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:47

They said, ´We have iman in the Lord of all the worlds

Verse 48 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:48

the Lord of Musa and Harun.´

Verse 49 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:49

He said, ´Have you had iman in him before I authorised you? He is your chief who taught you magic. But you will soon know! I will cut off your alternate hands and feet and I will crucify every one of you.´

Verse 50 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:50

They said, ´We do not care! We are returning to our Lord

Verse 51 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:51

We remain hopeful that our Lord will forgive us our mistakes for being the first of the muminun.´

Verse 52 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:52

We revealed to Musa: ´Travel with Our slaves by night. You will certainly be pursued.´

Verse 53 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:53

Pharaoh sent marshals into the cities

Verse 54 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:54

´These people are a small group

Verse 55 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:55

and we find them irritating

Verse 56 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:56

and we constitute a vigilant majority.´

Verse 57 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:57

We expelled them from gardens and springs

Verse 58 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:58

from treasures and a splendid situation

Verse 59 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:59

So it was! And We bequeathed them to the tribe of Israel

Verse 60 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:60

So they pursued them towards the east

Verse 61 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:61

And when the two hosts came into sight of one another Musa´s companions said, ´We will surely be overtaken!´

Verse 62 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:62

He said, ´Never! My Lord is with me and He will guide me.´

Verse 63 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:63

So We revealed to Musa, ´Strike the sea with your staff.´ And it split in two, each part like a towering cliff

Verse 64 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:64

And We brought the others right up to it

Verse 65 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:65

We rescued Musa and all those who were with him

Verse 66 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:66

Then We drowned the rest

Verse 67 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:67

There is certainly a Sign in that yet most of them are not muminun

Verse 68 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:68

Truly your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful

Verse 69 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:69

Recite to them the story of Ibrahim

Verse 70 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:70

when he said to his father and his people, ´What do you worship?´

Verse 71 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:71

They said, ´We worship idols and will continue to cling to them.´

Verse 72 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:72

He said, ´Do they hear you when you call

Verse 73 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:73

or do they help you or do you harm?´

Verse 74 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:74

They said, ´No, but this is what we found our fathers doing.´

Verse 75 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:75

He said, ´Have you really thought about what you worship

Verse 76 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:76

you and your fathers who came before

Verse 77 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:77

They are all my enemies — except for the Lord of all the worlds

Verse 78 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:78

He who created me and guides me

Verse 79 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:79

He who gives me food and gives me drink

Verse 80 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:80

and when I am ill, it is He who heals me

Verse 81 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:81

He who will cause my death, then give me life

Verse 82 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:82

He who I sincerely hope will forgive my mistakes on the Day of Reckoning

Verse 83 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:83

My Lord, give me right judgement and unite me with the righteous

Verse 84 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:84

and make me highly esteemed among the later peoples

Verse 85 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:85

and make me one of the inheritors of the Garden of Delight

Verse 86 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:86

and forgive my father — he was one of the misguided

Verse 87 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:87

and do not disgrace me on the Day they are raised up

Verse 88 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:88

the Day when neither wealth nor sons will be of any use —

Verse 89 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:89

except to those who come to Allah with sound and flawless hearts.´

Verse 90 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:90

The Garden will be brought near to those who have taqwa

Verse 91 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:91

The Blazing Fire will be displayed to the misled

Verse 92 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:92

They will be asked, ´Where are those you used to worship besides Allah

Verse 93 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:93

Can they help you or even help themselves?´

Verse 94 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:94

They will be bundled into it head first, they and the misled

Verse 95 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:95

and every one of Iblis´s regiments

Verse 96 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:96

Arguing in it with one another, they will say

Verse 97 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:97

´By Allah, we were plainly misguided

Verse 98 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:98

when We equated you with the Lord of all the worlds

Verse 99 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:99

It was only the evildoers who misguided us

Verse 100 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:100

and now we have no one to intercede for us

Verse 101 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:101

we do not have a single loyal friend

Verse 102 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:102

If only we could have another chance then we would be among the muminun!´

Verse 103 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:103

There is certainly a Sign in that, yet most of them are not muminun

Verse 104 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:104

Truly your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful

Verse 105 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:105

The people of Nuh denied the Messengers

Verse 106 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:106

When their brother Nuh said to them, ´Will you not have taqwa

Verse 107 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:107

I am a faithful Messenger to you

Verse 108 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:108

so have taqwa of Allah and obey me

Verse 109 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:109

I do not ask you for any wage for it. My wage is the responsibility of no one but the Lord of all the worlds

Verse 110 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:110

so have taqwa of Allah and obey me.´

Verse 111 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:111

they said, ´Why should we believe you when the vilest people follow you?´

Verse 112 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:112

He said, ´What do I know about what they have been doing

Verse 113 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:113

Their reckoning is the concern of my Lord alone if you were but aware

Verse 114 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:114

I am not going to chase away the muminun

Verse 115 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:115

I am only a clear warner.´

Verse 116 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:116

They said, ´Nuh, if you do not desist you will be stoned.´

Verse 117 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:117

He said, ´My Lord, my people have denied me

Verse 118 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:118

so make a clear judgement between me and them and rescue me and the muminun who are with me.´

Verse 119 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:119

So We rescued him and those with him in the loaded ship

Verse 120 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:120

Then afterwards We drowned the rest

Verse 121 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:121

There is certainly a Sign in that, yet most of them are not muminun

Verse 122 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:122

Truly your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful

Verse 123 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:123

´Ad denied the Messengers

Verse 124 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:124

when their brother Hud said to them, ´Will you not have taqwa

Verse 125 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:125

I am a faithful Messenger to you

Verse 126 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:126

so have taqwa of Allah and obey me

Verse 127 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:127

I do not ask you for any wage for it. My wage is the responsibility of no one but the Lord of all the worlds

Verse 128 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:128

Do you build a tower on every hilltop, just to amuse yourselves

Verse 129 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:129

and construct great fortresses, hoping to live for ever

Verse 130 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:130

and when you attack, attack as tyrants do

Verse 131 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:131

So have taqwa of Allah and obey me

Verse 132 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:132

Have taqwa of Him who has supplied you with what you know

Verse 133 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:133

supplied you with livestock and children

Verse 134 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:134

and gardens and clear springs

Verse 135 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:135

I fear for you the punishment of a terrible Day.´

Verse 136 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:136

They said, ´It makes no difference to us whether you preach or do not preach

Verse 137 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:137

This is only what the previous peoples did

Verse 138 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:138

We are not going to be punished.´

Verse 139 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:139

So they denied him and We destroyed them. There is certainly a Sign in that, yet most of them are not muminun

Verse 140 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:140

Truly your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful

Verse 141 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:141

Thamud denied the Messengers

Verse 142 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:142

when their brother Salih said to them, ´Will you not have taqwa

Verse 143 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:143

I am a faithful Messenger to you

Verse 144 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:144

so have taqwa of Allah and obey me

Verse 145 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:145

I do not ask you for any wage for it. My wage is the responsibility of no one but the Lord of all the worlds

Verse 146 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:146

Are you going to be left secure amid what is here

Verse 147 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:147

amid gardens and clear springs

Verse 148 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:148

and cultivated fields and palms with supple spathes

Verse 149 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:149

Will you continue hewing houses from the mountains with exultant skill

Verse 150 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:150

So have taqwa of Allah and obey me

Verse 151 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:151

Do not obey the orders of the profligate

Verse 152 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:152

those who corrupt the earth and do not put things right.´

Verse 153 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:153

They said, ´You are merely someone bewitched

Verse 154 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:154

You are nothing but a human being like ourselves, so produce a Sign if you are telling the truth.´

Verse 155 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:155

He said, ´Here is a she-camel. She has a time for drinking and you have a time for drinking — on specified days

Verse 156 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:156

Do not do anything to harm her or the punishment of a terrible day will come down on you.´

Verse 157 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:157

But they hamstrung her and woke up full of remorse

Verse 158 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:158

for the punishment did come down them. There is certainly a Sign in that, yet most of them are not muminun

Verse 159 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:159

Truly your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful

Verse 160 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:160

The people of Lut denied the Messengers

Verse 161 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:161

when their brother Lut said to them, ´Will you not have taqwa

Verse 162 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:162

I am a faithful Messenger to you

Verse 163 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:163

so have taqwa of Allah and obey me

Verse 164 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:164

I do not ask you for any wage for it. My wage is the responsibility of no one but the Lord of all the worlds

Verse 165 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:165

Of all beings, do you lie with males

Verse 166 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:166

leaving the wives Allah has created for you? You are a people who have overstepped the limits.´

Verse 167 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:167

They said, ´Lut, if you do not desist you will be expelled.´

Verse 168 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:168

He said, ´I am someone who detests the deed you perpetrate

Verse 169 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:169

My Lord, rescue me and my family from what they are doing.´

Verse 170 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:170

Therefore We rescued him and all his family —

Verse 171 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:171

except for an old woman who remained behind

Verse 172 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:172

Then We utterly destroyed the rest

Verse 173 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:173

and made a Rain come pouring down upon them. How evil is the rain of those who are warned

Verse 174 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:174

There is certainly a Sign in that, yet most of them are not muminun

Verse 175 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:175

Truly your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful

Verse 176 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:176

The Companions of the Thicket denied the Messengers

Verse 177 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:177

when Shu´ayb said to them, ´Will you not have taqwa

Verse 178 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:178

I am a faithful Messenger to you

Verse 179 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:179

so have taqwa of Allah and obey me

Verse 180 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:180

I do not ask you for any wage for it. My wage is the responsibility of no one but the Lord of all the worlds

Verse 181 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:181

Give full measure. Do not skimp

Verse 182 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:182

Weigh with a level balance

Verse 183 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:183

Do not diminish people´s goods and do not go about the earth, corrupting it

Verse 184 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:184

Have taqwa of Him who created you and the earlier creatures.´

Verse 185 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:185

They said, ´You are merely someone bewitched

Verse 186 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:186

You are nothing but a human being like ourselves. We think you are a liar

Verse 187 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:187

So make lumps from heaven fall down on us if you are telling the truth.´

Verse 188 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:188

He said, ´My Lord knows best what you are doing.´

Verse 189 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:189

They denied him and the punishment of the Day of Shadow came down on them. It was indeed the punishment of a terrible Day

Verse 190 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:190

There is certainly a Sign in that, yet most of them are not muminun

Verse 191 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:191

Truly your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful

Verse 192 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:192

Truly it is revelation sent down by the Lord of all the worlds

Verse 193 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:193

The Faithful Ruh brought it down

Verse 194 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:194

to your heart so you would be one of the Warners

Verse 195 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:195

in a clear Arabic tongue

Verse 196 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:196

It is certainly in the scriptures of the previous peoples

Verse 197 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:197

Is it not indeed a Sign for them that the scholars of the tribe of Israel have knowledge of it

Verse 198 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:198

If We had sent it down to a non-Arab

Verse 199 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:199

who had then recited it to them, they still would not have iman in it

Verse 200 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:200

That is how We thread it into the hearts of the evildoers

Verse 201 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:201

They will not have iman in it until they see the painful punishment

Verse 202 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:202

It will come upon them suddenly when they are not expecting it

Verse 203 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:203

They will say, ´Can we be granted a reprieve?´

Verse 204 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:204

Do they want to hasten Our punishment

Verse 205 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:205

Do you think, if We let them enjoy themselves for years

Verse 206 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:206

and then what they were promised comes to them

Verse 207 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:207

that what they enjoyed will be of any use to them

Verse 208 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:208

We have never destroyed a city without giving it prior warning

Verse 209 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:209

as a reminder. We were never unjust

Verse 210 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:210

The shaytans did not bring it down

Verse 211 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:211

It does not befit them and they are not capable of it

Verse 212 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:212

They are debarred from hearing it

Verse 213 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:213

So do not call on any other god along with Allah or you will be among those who will be punished

Verse 214 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:214

Warn your near relatives

Verse 215 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:215

and take the muminun who follow you under your wing

Verse 216 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:216

If they disobey you, say, ´I am free of what you do.´

Verse 217 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:217

Put your trust in the Almighty, the Most Merciful

Verse 218 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:218

He who sees you when you stand up to pray

Verse 219 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:219

and your movements with those who prostrate

Verse 220 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:220

He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing

Verse 221 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:221

Shall I tell you upon whom the shaytans descend

Verse 222 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:222

They descend on every evil liar

Verse 223 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:223

They give them a hearing and most of them are liars

Verse 224 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:224

And as for poets, it is the misled who follow them

Verse 225 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:225

Do you not see how they ramble on in every style

Verse 226 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:226

and say things which they do not do

Verse 227 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:227

except those who have iman and do right actions and remember Allah repeatedly and defend themselves after they have been wronged? Those who do wrong will soon know the kind of reversal they will receive
