Translation by Aisha Bewley — Permalink

Verse 1 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:1

Verse 2 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:2

The Romans have been defeated

Verse 3 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:3

in the land nearby, but after their defeat they will themselves be victorious

Verse 4 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:4

in a few years´ time. The affair is Allah´s from beginning to end. On that day, the muminun will rejoice

Verse 5 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:5

in Allah´s help. He grants victory to whoever He wills. He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful

Verse 6 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:6

That is Allah´s promise. Allah does not break His promise. But most people do not know it

Verse 7 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:7

They know an outward aspect of the life of this world but are heedless of the Next World

Verse 8 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:8

Have they not reflected within themselves? Allah did not create the heavens and the earth and everything between them except with truth and for a fixed term. Yet many people reject the meeting with their Lord

Verse 9 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:9

Have they not travelled in the earth and seen the final fate of those before them? They had greater strength than them and cultivated the land and inhabited it in far greater numbers than they do. Their Messengers also came to them with the Clear Signs. Allah would never have wronged them; but they wronged themselves

Verse 10 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:10

Then the final fate of those who did evil will be the Worst because they denied Allah´s Signs and mocked at them

Verse 11 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:11

Allah originates creation, then will regenerate it, then you will be returned to Him

Verse 12 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:12

On the Day the Hour arrives the evildoers will be in despair

Verse 13 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:13

None of their partner-gods will intercede for them. They will reject their partner-gods

Verse 14 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:14

On the Day the Hour arrives, that Day they will be split up

Verse 15 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:15

As for those who had iman and did right actions, they will be made joyful in a verdant meadow

Verse 16 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:16

But as for those who were kafir and denied Our Signs and the meeting of the Next World, they will be summoned to the punishment

Verse 17 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:17

So glory be to Allah when you start the night and when you greet the day

Verse 18 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:18

Praise be to Him in the heavens and the earth, in the afternoon and when you reach midday

Verse 19 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:19

He brings forth the living from the dead and brings forth the dead from the living and brings the earth to life after it was dead. In the same way you too will be brought forth

Verse 20 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:20

Among His Signs is that He created you from dust and here you are now, widespread human beings

Verse 21 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:21

Among His Signs is that He created spouses for you of your own kind so that you might find tranquillity in them. And He has placed affection and compassion between you. There are certainly Signs in that for people who reflect

Verse 22 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:22

Among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and earth and the variety of your languages and colours. There are certainly Signs in that for every being

Verse 23 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:23

Among His Signs is your sleep by night and day and your seeking after His bounty. There are certainly Signs in that for people who hear

Verse 24 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:24

Among His Signs is that He shows you lightning, a source of fear and eager hope, and sends down water from the sky, bringing the dead earth back to life by it. There are certainly Signs in that for people who use their intellect

Verse 25 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:25

Among His Signs is that heaven and earth hold firm by His command. Then, when He calls you forth from the earth, you will emerge at once

Verse 26 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:26

Everyone in the heavens and earth belongs to Him. All are submissive to Him

Verse 27 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:27

It is He who originated creation and then regenerates it. That is very easy for Him. His is the most exalted designation in the heavens and the earth. He is the Almighty, the All-Wise

Verse 28 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:28

He has made an example for you from among yourselves. Are any of the slaves you own partners with you in what We have provided for you so that you are equal in respect of it, you fearing them the same as one another? In that way We make Our Signs clear for people who use their intellect

Verse 29 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:29

However, those who do wrong pursue their whims and desires without any knowledge. Who can guide those whom Allah has led astray? They will have no helpers

Verse 30 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:30

So set your face firmly towards the Deen, as a pure natural believer, Allah´s natural pattern on which He made mankind. There is no changing Allah´s creation. That is the true Deen — but most people do not know it —

Verse 31 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:31

turning towards Him. Have taqwa of Him and establish salat. Do not be among the idolaters

Verse 32 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:32

those who split up their deen, and form into sects, each faction exulting in what they have

Verse 33 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:33

When harm touches people they call on their Lord, making tawba to Him. But then, when He gives them a taste of mercy from Him, a group of them immediately associate others with their Lord

Verse 34 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:34

to show ingratitude for what We have given them. ´Enjoy yourselves — you will soon know.´

Verse 35 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:35

Or have We sent down some authority to them, which advocates associating others with Him

Verse 36 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:36

When We give people a taste of mercy, they rejoice in it, but when something bad happens to them because of what they themselves have done, they immediately lose all hope

Verse 37 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:37

Do they not see that Allah expands provision for whoever He wills and also restricts it? There are certainly Signs in that for people who have iman

Verse 38 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:38

Give relatives their due, and the poor and travellers. That is best for those who seek the pleasure of Allah. They are the ones who are successful

Verse 39 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:39

What you give with usurious intent, aiming to get back a greater amount from people´s wealth, does not become greater with Allah. But anything you give as zakat, seeking the Face of Allah — all who do that will get back twice as much

Verse 40 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:40

Allah is He who created you, then provides for you, then will cause you to die and then bring you back to life. Can any of your partner-gods do any of that? Glory be to Him and may He be exalted above anything they associate with Him

Verse 41 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:41

Corruption has appeared in both land and sea because of what people´s own hands have brought about so that they may taste something of what they have done so that hopefully they will turn back

Verse 42 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:42

Say: ´Travel about the earth and see the final fate of those before. Most of them were idolaters.´

Verse 43 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:43

So set your face firmly towards the True Deen, before a Day comes from Allah which cannot be turned back. On that Day they will be split up

Verse 44 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:44

Those who were kafir will find that their kufr was against themselves. Those who did right were making the way easy for themselves

Verse 45 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:45

so that He can repay with His bounty those who had iman and did right actions. He certainly does not love the kafirun

Verse 46 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:46

Among His Signs is that He sends the winds bearing good news, to give you a taste of His mercy, and to make the ships run by His command, and to enable you to seek His bounty so that hopefully you will be thankful

Verse 47 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:47

Before you We sent other Messengers to their people, and they too brought them the Clear Signs. We took revenge on those who did evil; and it is Our duty to help the muminun

Verse 48 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:48

It is Allah who sends the winds which stir up clouds which He spreads about the sky however He wills. He forms them into dark clumps and you see the rain come pouring out from the middle of them. When He makes it fall on those of His slaves He wills, they rejoice

Verse 49 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:49

even though before He sent it down on them they were in despair

Verse 50 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:50

So look at the effect of the mercy of Allah, how He brings the dead earth back to life. Truly He is the One Who brings the dead to life. He has power over all things

Verse 51 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:51

But if We send a wind, and they see it turning yellow, still they persist after that in being kafir

Verse 52 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:52

You will not make dead men hear; you will not make deaf men hear the call, when they turn their backs in flight

Verse 53 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:53

You will not guide blind men from their misguidance. You will not make anyone hear except for those who have iman in Our Signs and so are Muslims

Verse 54 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:54

It is Allah who created you from a weak beginning then after weakness gave you strength then after strength ordained weakness and grey hair. He creates whatever He wills. He is All-Knowing, All-Powerful

Verse 55 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:55

On the Day the Last Hour arrives, the evildoers will swear they have not even tarried for an hour. That is the extent to which they are deceived

Verse 56 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:56

Those who have been given knowledge and iman will say, ´You tarried in accordance with Allah´s Decree until the Day of Rising. And this is the Day of Rising, but you did not know it.´

Verse 57 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:57

On that Day the excuses of those who did wrong will not help them nor will they be able to appease Allah

Verse 58 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:58

We have made all kinds of examples for people in this Qur´an. If you bring them a Sign those who are kafir will say, ´You are just purveyors of falsehood!´

Verse 59 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:59

In that way Allah seals up the hearts of those who do not know

Verse 60 — Surah Ar-Rum 30:60

So be steadfast. Allah´s promise is true. Do not let those who have no certainty belittle you
