Translation by A. J. Arberry — Permalink
Verse 1 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:1
Ta Sin Mim
Verse 2 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:2
Those are the signs of the Manifest Book
Verse 3 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:3
Perchance thou consumest thyself that they are not believers
Verse 4 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:4
If We will, We shall send down on them out of heaven a sign, so their necks will stay humbled to it
Verse 5 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:5
But never fresh remembrance comes to them from the All-merciful, except they turn away from it
Verse 6 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:6
So they have cried lies; therefore assuredly tidings will come to them of that they mocked at
Verse 7 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:7
What, have they not regarded the earth, how many therein We have caused to grow of every generous kind
Verse 8 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:8
Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers
Verse 9 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:9
Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate
Verse 10 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:10
And when thy Lord called to Moses, 'Go to the people of the evildoers
Verse 11 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:11
the people of Pharaoh; will they not be godfearing
Verse 12 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:12
He said, 'My Lord, I fear they will cry me lies
Verse 13 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:13
and my breast will be straitened, and my tongue will not be loosed; so send to Aaron
Verse 14 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:14
They also have a sin against me, and I fear they will slay me
Verse 15 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:15
Said He, 'No indeed; but go, both of you, with Our signs, and We assuredly shall be with you, listening
Verse 16 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:16
So go you to Pharaoh, and say, "Verily, I am the Messenger of the Lord of all Being
Verse 17 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:17
so send forth with us the Children of Israel
Verse 18 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:18
He said, 'Did we not raise thee amongst us as a child? Didst thou not tarry among us years of thy life
Verse 19 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:19
And thou didst the deed thou didst, being one of the ungrateful
Verse 20 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:20
Said he, 'Indeed I did it then, being one of those that stray
Verse 21 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:21
so I fled from you, fearing you. But my Lord gave me Judgment and made me one of the Envoys
Verse 22 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:22
That is a blessing thou reproachest me with, having enslaved the Children of Israel
Verse 23 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:23
Pharaoh said, 'And what is the Lord of all Being
Verse 24 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:24
He said, 'The Lord of the heavens and earth, and what between them is, if you have faith
Verse 25 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:25
Said he to those about him, 'Do you not hear
Verse 26 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:26
He said, 'Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients
Verse 27 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:27
Said he, 'Surely your Messenger who was sent to you is possessed
Verse 28 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:28
He said, 'The Lord of the East and West, and what between them is, if you have understanding
Verse 29 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:29
Said he, 'If thou takest a god other than me, I shall surely make thee one of the imprisoned
Verse 30 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:30
He said, 'What, even though I brought thee something so manifest
Verse 31 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:31
Said he, 'Bring it then, if thou art of the truthful
Verse 32 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:32
So he cast his staff, and behold, it was a serpent manifest
Verse 33 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:33
And he drew forth his hand, and lo, it was white to the beholders
Verse 34 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:34
Said he to the Council about him, 'Surely this man is a cunning sorcerer
Verse 35 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:35
who desires to expel you from your land by his sorcery; what do you command
Verse 36 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:36
They said, 'Put him and his brother off a while, and send among the cities musterers
Verse 37 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:37
to bring thee every cunning sorcerer
Verse 38 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:38
So the sorcerers were assembled for the appointed time of a fixed day
Verse 39 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:39
The people were asked, 'Will you assemble
Verse 40 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:40
Haply we shall follow the sorcerers if it should be they are the victors
Verse 41 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:41
Then, when the sorcerers came, they said to Pharaoh, 'Shall we indeed have a wage, if we should be the victors
Verse 42 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:42
He said, 'Yes indeed; and you shall then be among the near-stationed
Verse 43 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:43
Moses said to them, 'Cast you down what you will cast
Verse 44 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:44
So they cast their ropes and their staffs, and said, 'By the might of Pharaoh we shall be the victors
Verse 45 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:45
Then Moses cast his staff and lo, it forthwith swallowed up their lying invention
Verse 46 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:46
so the sorcerers were cast down, bowing themselves
Verse 47 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:47
They said, 'We believe in the Lord of all Being
Verse 48 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:48
the Lord of Moses and Aaron
Verse 49 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:49
Said Pharaoh, 'You have believed him before I gave you leave. Why, he is the chief of you, the same that taught you sorcery; now you shall know! I shall assuredly cut off alternately your hands and feet, then I shall crucify you all together
Verse 50 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:50
They said, 'There is no harm; surely unto our Lord we are turning
Verse 51 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:51
We are eager that our Lord should forgive us our offences, for that we are the first of the believers
Verse 52 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:52
Also We revealed unto Moses, 'Go with My servants by night; surely you will be followed
Verse 53 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:53
Then Pharaoh sent among the cities musterers
Verse 54 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:54
Behold, these are a small troop
Verse 55 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:55
and indeed they are enraging us
Verse 56 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:56
and we are a host on our guard
Verse 57 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:57
So We expelled them from gardens and fountains
Verse 58 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:58
and treasures and a noble station
Verse 59 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:59
even so, and We bequeathed them upon the Children of Israel
Verse 60 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:60
Then they followed them at the sunrise
Verse 61 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:61
and, when the two hosts sighted each other, the companions of Moses said, 'We are overtaken
Verse 62 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:62
Said he, 'No indeed; surely my Lord is with me; He will guide me
Verse 63 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:63
Then We revealed to Moses, 'Strike with thy staff the sea'; and it clave, and each part was as a mighty mount
Verse 64 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:64
And there We brought the others on
Verse 65 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:65
and We delivered Moses and those with him all together
Verse 66 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:66
then We drowned the others
Verse 67 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:67
Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers
Verse 68 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:68
Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate
Verse 69 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:69
And recite to them the tiding of Abraham
Verse 70 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:70
when he said to his father and his people, 'What do you serve
Verse 71 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:71
They said, 'We serve idols, and continue cleaving to them
Verse 72 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:72
He said, 'Do they hear you when you call
Verse 73 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:73
or do they profit you, or harm
Verse 74 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:74
They said, 'Nay, but we found our fathers so doing
Verse 75 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:75
He said, 'And have you considered what you have been serving
Verse 76 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:76
you and your fathers, the elders
Verse 77 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:77
They are an enemy to me, except the Lord of all Being
Verse 78 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:78
who created me, and Himself guides me
Verse 79 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:79
and Himself gives me to eat and drink
Verse 80 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:80
and, whenever I am sick, heals me
Verse 81 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:81
who makes me to die, then gives me life
Verse 82 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:82
and who I am eager shall forgive me my offence on the Day of Doom
Verse 83 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:83
My Lord, give me Judgment, and join me with the righteous
Verse 84 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:84
and appoint me a tongue of truthfulness among the others
Verse 85 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:85
Make me one of the inheritors of the Garden of Bliss
Verse 86 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:86
and forgive my father, for he is one of those astray
Verse 87 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:87
Degrade me not upon the day when they are raised up
Verse 88 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:88
the day when neither wealth nor sons shall profit
Verse 89 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:89
except for him who comes to God with a pure heart
Verse 90 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:90
And Paradise shall be brought forward for the godfearing
Verse 91 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:91
and Hell advanced for the perverse
Verse 92 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:92
It shall be said to them, 'Where is that you were serving
Verse 93 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:93
apart from God? Do they help you or help themselves
Verse 94 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:94
Then they shall be pitched into it, they and the perverse
Verse 95 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:95
and the hosts of Iblis, all together
Verse 96 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:96
They shall say, as they dispute there one with another
Verse 97 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:97
By God, we were certainly in manifest error
Verse 98 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:98
when we made you equal with the Lord of all Being
Verse 99 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:99
It was naught but the sinners that led us astray
Verse 100 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:100
so now we have no intercessors
Verse 101 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:101
no loyal friend
Verse 102 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:102
O that we might return again, and be among the believers
Verse 103 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:103
Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers
Verse 104 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:104
Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate
Verse 105 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:105
The people of Noah cried lies to the Envoys
Verse 106 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:106
when their brother Noah said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing
Verse 107 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:107
I am for you a faithful Messenger
Verse 108 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:108
so serve you God, and obey you me
Verse 109 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:109
I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being
Verse 110 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:110
so fear you God, and obey you me
Verse 111 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:111
They said, 'Shall we believe thee, whom the vilest follow
Verse 112 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:112
He said, 'What knowledge have I of that they have been doing
Verse 113 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:113
Their account falls only upon my Lord, were you but aware
Verse 114 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:114
I would not drive away the believers
Verse 115 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:115
I am naught but a plain warner
Verse 116 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:116
They said, 'If thou givest not over, Noah, thou shalt assuredly be one of the stoned
Verse 117 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:117
He said, 'My Lord, my people have cried me lies
Verse 118 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:118
so give true deliverance between me and them, and deliver me and the believers that are with me
Verse 119 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:119
So We delivered him, and those with him, in the laden ship
Verse 120 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:120
then afterwards We drowned the rest
Verse 121 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:121
Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers
Verse 122 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:122
Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate
Verse 123 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:123
Ad cried lies to the Envoys
Verse 124 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:124
when their brother Hood said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing
Verse 125 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:125
I am for you a faithful Messenger
Verse 126 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:126
so fear you God, and obey you me
Verse 127 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:127
I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being
Verse 128 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:128
What, do you build on every prominence a sign, sporting
Verse 129 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:129
and do you take to you castles, haply to dwell forever
Verse 130 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:130
When you assault, you assault like tyrants
Verse 131 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:131
So fear you God, and obey you me
Verse 132 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:132
and fear Him who has succoured you with what you know
Verse 133 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:133
succoured you with flocks and sons
Verse 134 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:134
gardens and fountains
Verse 135 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:135
Indeed, I fear for you the chastisement of a dreadful day
Verse 136 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:136
They said, 'Alike it is to us, whether thou admonishest, or art not one of the admonishers
Verse 137 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:137
this is nothing but the habit of the ancients
Verse 138 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:138
and we shall not be chastised
Verse 139 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:139
So they cried him lies; then We destroyed them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers
Verse 140 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:140
Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate
Verse 141 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:141
Thamood cried lies to the Envoys
Verse 142 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:142
when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing
Verse 143 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:143
I am for you a faithful Messenger
Verse 144 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:144
so fear you God, and obey you me
Verse 145 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:145
I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being
Verse 146 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:146
Will you be left secure in this here
Verse 147 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:147
among gardens and fountains
Verse 148 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:148
sown fields, and palms with slender spathes
Verse 149 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:149
Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains
Verse 150 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:150
So fear you God, and obey you me
Verse 151 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:151
and obey not the commandment of the prodigal
Verse 152 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:152
who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright
Verse 153 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:153
They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched
Verse 154 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:154
thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful
Verse 155 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:155
He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed
Verse 156 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:156
and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day
Verse 157 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:157
But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful
Verse 158 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:158
and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers
Verse 159 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:159
Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate
Verse 160 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:160
The people of Lot cried lies to the Envoys
Verse 161 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:161
when their brother Lot said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing
Verse 162 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:162
I am for you a faithful Messenger
Verse 163 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:163
so fear you God, and obey you me
Verse 164 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:164
I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being
Verse 165 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:165
What, do you come to male beings
Verse 166 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:166
leaving your wives that your Lord created for you? Nay, but you are a people of transgressors
Verse 167 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:167
They said, 'If thou givest not over, Lot, thou shalt assuredly be one of the expelled
Verse 168 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:168
He said, 'Truly I am a detester of what you do
Verse 169 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:169
My Lord, deliver me and my people from that they do
Verse 170 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:170
So We delivered him and his people all together
Verse 171 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:171
save an old woman among those that tarried
Verse 172 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:172
then We destroyed the others
Verse 173 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:173
and We rained on them a rain; and evil is the rain of them that are warned
Verse 174 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:174
Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers
Verse 175 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:175
Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate
Verse 176 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:176
The men of the Thicket cried lies to the Envoys
Verse 177 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:177
when Shuaib said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing
Verse 178 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:178
I am for you a faithful Messenger, so fear you God, and obey you me
Verse 179 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:179
I ask of you no wage for this
Verse 180 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:180
my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being
Verse 181 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:181
Fill up the measure, and be not cheaters
Verse 182 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:182
and weigh with the straight balance
Verse 183 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:183
and diminish not the goods of the people, and do not mischief in the earth, working corruption
Verse 184 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:184
Fear Him who created you, and the generations of the ancients
Verse 185 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:185
They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched
Verse 186 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:186
thou art naught but a mortal, like us; indeed, we think that thou art one of the liars
Verse 187 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:187
Then drop down on us lumps from heaven, if thou art one of the truthful
Verse 188 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:188
He said, 'My Lord knows very well what you are doing
Verse 189 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:189
But they cried him lies; then there seized them the chastisement of the Day of Shadow; assuredly it was the chastisement of a dreadful day
Verse 190 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:190
Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers
Verse 191 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:191
Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate
Verse 192 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:192
Truly it is the revelation of the Lord of all Being
Verse 193 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:193
brought down by the Faithful Spirit
Verse 194 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:194
upon thy heart, that thou mayest be one of the warners
Verse 195 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:195
in a clear, Arabic tongue
Verse 196 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:196
Truly it is in the Scriptures of the ancients
Verse 197 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:197
Was it not a sign for them, that it is known to the learned of the Children of Israel
Verse 198 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:198
If We had sent it down on a barbarian
Verse 199 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:199
and he had recited it to them, they would not have believed in it
Verse 200 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:200
Even so We have caused it to enter into the hearts of the sinners
Verse 201 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:201
who will not believe in it, until they see the painful chastisement
Verse 202 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:202
so that it will come upon them suddenly, while they are not aware
Verse 203 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:203
and they will say, 'Shall we be respited
Verse 204 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:204
What, do they seek to hasten Our chastisement
Verse 205 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:205
What thinkest thou? If We give them enjoyment of days for many years
Verse 206 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:206
then there comes on them that they were promised
Verse 207 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:207
what will it then avail them, the enjoyment of days they were given
Verse 208 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:208
Never a city We destroyed, but it had warners
Verse 209 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:209
for a reminder; and never did We wrong
Verse 210 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:210
Not by the Satans has it been brought down
Verse 211 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:211
it behoves them not, neither are they able
Verse 212 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:212
Truly, they are expelled from hearing
Verse 213 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:213
So call thou not upon another god with God, lest thou shouldst be one of those that are chastised
Verse 214 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:214
And warn thy clan, thy nearest kin
Verse 215 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:215
Lower thy wing to those who follow thee, being believers
Verse 216 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:216
then, if they disobey thee, say, 'I am quit of that you do
Verse 217 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:217
Put thy trust in the All-mighty, the All-compassionate
Verse 218 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:218
who sees thee when thou standest
Verse 219 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:219
and when thou turnest about among those who bow
Verse 220 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:220
Surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing
Verse 221 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:221
Shall I tell you on whom the Satans come down
Verse 222 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:222
They come down on every guilty impostor
Verse 223 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:223
They give ear, but most of them are liars
Verse 224 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:224
And the poets -- the perverse follow them
Verse 225 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:225
hast thou not seen how they wander in every valley
Verse 226 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:226
and how they say that which they do not
Verse 227 — Surah Ash-Shuara 26:227
Save those that believe, and do righteous deeds, and remember God oft, and help themselves after being wronged; and those who do wrong shall surely know by what overturning they will he overturned
