Translation by Hamid S Aziz
Verse 1
ALIF LAM RA. Those are the ayats (signs or verses) of Revelation and of a clear Reading (Quran) (or that clarifies)
Verse 2
Many a time will those who disbelieve wish they had surrendered (obeyed or been Muslims)
Verse 3
Leave them to eat and enjoy the good things of life and let hope beguile them, but they shall come to know
Verse 4
We never did destroy a community but there was a fixed term decreed for it
Verse 5
No nation can hasten on its appointed time, nor put it off
Verse 6
But they say, "O you to whom the Reminder (the Quran) has been sent down! Verily, you are possessed
Verse 7
Why do you not bring us the angels if you do tell the truth
Verse 8
We sent not down the angels save as a Fact (for a just or right cause, effect or reason); but then (if We did) they would have no respite
Verse 9
Verily, We have revealed (sent down) the Reminder, and, verily, We are its Guardian
Verse 10
We, verily, sent Messengers before you among the sects of men in past ages
Verse 11
But there never came a messenger to them but they did mock him
Verse 12
Even so do We let it traverse the heart of the guilty
Verse 13
They will not believe therein, though the example of those of past times is before them
Verse 14
But had We opened to them a Gate of Heaven and they had continued to ascend through it
Verse 15
They would only say, "Our eye-sight is only intoxicated; nay, we have been bewitched by sorcery (or hypnotized)
Verse 16
And We have placed in the sky the Signs of the Zodiac (or mansions or constellations of stars), and have made them beautiful to the beholders
Verse 17
And We have guarded them from every accursed (rejected, pelted) devil (or evil spirit)
Verse 18
But any that steal a hearing, there follows him a bright flaming fire (or shooting star)
Verse 19
And the earth have We spread out and placed on it firm mountains, and have caused to grow upon it of everything in balanced measure
Verse 20
And We have made for you means of livelihood therein, and for those for whom you provide not (or for whom you are not responsible)
Verse 21
Nor is there aught but the treasuries (storehouses) of it are with Us, and We do not send it down save in a noted quantity (ascertainable measure)
Verse 22
And We send forth the impregnating (fertilizing, invigorating, fecundating) winds, and We send down water from the sky, and We give it to you to drink. It is not you who hold the store thereof
Verse 23
And We, verily, We quicken and kill; and We are of all things the Inheritor
Verse 24
And We already know the foremost of you, and We know the laggards
Verse 25
And, verily, it is your Lord who will gather you; verily, He is Wise, Aware
Verse 26
And We did create man from potter´s (or sound emitting) clay of black mud wrought into form
Verse 27
And the jinn We created before of smokeless fire (or scorched wind)
Verse 28
When your Lord said to the angels, "Verily, I am creating a mortal from (sound-emitting) clay of black mud wrought into shape
Verse 29
So when I have fashioned it, and breathed into it of My Spirit, then fall you down before him, prostrating yourselves before him (in obeisance)
Verse 30
So the angels fell prostrate in obeisance, all of them together
Verse 31
Save Iblis, who refused to be among the prostrate
Verse 32
He said, "O Iblis! What ails you that you are not among the prostrate
Verse 33
Said he, "Why should I prostrate myself before a mortal whom you have created from potter´s (sound emitting) clay of black mud wrought into form
Verse 34
He said, "Then get you forth from hence, for verily, you are an outcast (rejected, accursed, pelted)
Verse 35
And, verily, the curse shall be upon you until the Day of Judgment
Verse 36
Said he, "O my Lord! Reprieve me until the day when they shall be raised
Verse 37
He said, "Then, verily, you are of the reprieved
Verse 38
Until the Day of the Appointed Time
Verse 39
He said, "O my Lord! Because you have put me in the wrong I will surely make wrong seemly for them on earth, and I will put them all in the wrong
Verse 40
Save such of your servants as are sincere and purified
Verse 41
Said He, "This is a Straight Way which leads to Me (or is incumbent upon Me)
Verse 42
Verily, over My servants you have no authority, save such of the misguided (or rebellious) as follow you
Verse 43
And, verily, hell is promised to them all
Verse 44
It has seven gates (entrances); to each gate (entrance) is assigned a certain class (or portion)
Verse 45
Verily, those who fear Allah shall dwell amidst gardens and springs
Verse 46
(It will be said to them) "Enter you therein in peace and safety
Verse 47
And We will strip off whatever ill-feeling is in their breasts; as brethren they rest on couches face to face
Verse 48
No toil shall touch them therein, nor shall they be expelled there from
Verse 49
Inform my servants that I am the Forgiving, the Merciful
Verse 50
And that My doom is a grievous doom
Verse 51
And inform them concerning Abraham´s guests
Verse 52
When they came unto him and said, "Peace!", he said, "Verily, we are afraid of you
Verse 53
They said, "Be not afraid! Verily, we bring you glad tidings of a boy possessing wisdom
Verse 54
He said, "Do you bring me this glad tidings when old age has overtaken me? Of what then do you bring good tidings
Verse 55
They said, "We bring you glad tidings in truth, then be not of those who despair
Verse 56
He said, "Who would despair of the mercy of his Lord save those who err
Verse 57
He said, "What then is your business, O you messengers
Verse 58
They said, "Verily, we are sent unto a people deeply in guilt
Verse 59
Save only the household (family or adherents) of Lot, all of them we are certainly charged to save
Verse 60
Except his wife, of whom we have ascertained that she shall be of those who stay behind
Verse 61
And when the messengers came unto the adherents of Lot
Verse 62
He said, "Verily, you are a people whom I recognize not (or of uncommon appearance)
Verse 63
They said, "Yea, we have come to you to accomplish that whereof they keep disputing
Verse 64
And we bring you the truth (or the inevitable), and, verily, we are truth-tellers
Verse 65
Travel then with your household in the deep darkness of the night, and follow you their rear; and let not any one of you turn round to look back; but go on to where you are commanded
Verse 66
And We made plain for him the decree that the uttermost one of these people should be cut off on the morrow
Verse 67
Then the people of the city came, glad at the tidings (of the arrival of the young men)
Verse 68
Said Lot, "Verily, these are my guests, therefore disgrace me not
Verse 69
But fear Allah, and put me not to shame
Verse 70
They said, "Have we not forbidden you to speak for all in the world
Verse 71
He said, "Here are my daughters, if do it you must
Verse 72
By your life (O Muhammad)! In their frenzy of intoxication (passion) they went blindly (distractedly) to and fro
Verse 73
And the mighty blast caught them at dawn
Verse 74
And We turned their cities upside down, and rained down on them brimstones hard as baked clay
Verse 75
Behold! In this is a sign to those who by tokens understand (or can read the signs)
Verse 76
And, verily, the cities were on a high road that still remains
Verse 77
Verily, in this is a sign for those who believe
Verse 78
And the companions of the Wood (Midian), too, were unjust
Verse 79
And We took vengeance on them, and, verily, they were both on an open highway, plain to see
Verse 80
And the companions of Al-Hijr (the Rocky Tract) also rejected the messengers
Verse 81
And We brought them Our revelations, but they did turn away there from
Verse 82
And they used to hew out dwellings from the mountain to dwell in safety
Verse 83
But the mighty blast seized them in the morning
Verse 84
And that which they counted as gain availed them naught
Verse 85
We created not the heavens and the earth and all that is between them both, save with truth. And, verily, the Hour is surely coming; then do you forgive with a gracious forgiveness
Verse 86
Verily, your Lord He is the Master Creator, the All-knowing
Verse 87
We have already given you the Seven Oft-Repeated (the verses of the first chapter of the Quran), and the mighty Quran
Verse 88
Let not your eyes strain after what We have allowed certain classes among them to enjoy, nor grieve for them; but lower your wing (in tenderness) to the believers
Verse 89
And say, "Verily, I, even I, am a plain Warner
Verse 90
Such as We sent down for those who make divisions
Verse 91
Those who break the Quran into separate parts
Verse 92
Them, by your Lord! We shall question, one and all
Verse 93
About what they used to do
Verse 94
Therefore, proclaim what you are commanded, and withdraw from the idolaters
Verse 95
Verily, We are enough defence for you against the scoffers
Verse 96
Who place other gods along with Allah; but they at length shall come to know
Verse 97
And well know We that your breast was at times oppressed by what they say
Verse 98
But hymn the praises of your Lord, and be you of those who make prostrations (or obeisance)
Verse 99
And serve your Lord until there comes unto you the Hour that is certain (death)
